Abhinaya Darpaṇam

Abhinaya Darpanam” is an ancient Sanskrit text attributed to Nandikeshvara, , an ancient Indian sage, and is believed to have been written between the 4th and 7th centuries CE. It continues to be a valuable resource for dancers and actors, offering insights into the nuanced language of expression in the performing arts. In this series, Natya Chittra has tried to re-present the contents of the text in a simple illustrative manner. Novel concepts have been implemented to encourage the reader to engage and create with the content.

Listen.Read.Choreograph

Utilizing the structured framework of the dance form, Natya Chittra presents a Workbook on Bharatanatyam, a first in dance pedagogy. Pre-recorded music for a Bharatanatyam presentation is included with the workbook, and the dance student is encouraged to choreograph to the music. The workbook provides fundamental information about the music and offers suggestions for adavus to support the choreography process. By actively engaging with the workbook, the student is encouraged to apply lessons learned in dance class and test their understanding of dance technique.
